The following is an excerpt of my document exploring the alternative to the Indian Child Welfare Act to preserve the American Indian communities from a section titled: IV. A HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF INDIAN CHILD WELFARE.
It started as early as the 1600s when the colonists through their now well-known schools like Harvard, William and Mary and Dartmouth and their associated Christian Missions started the goals of “expedient civilizing and Christianizing the pagans.” President George Washington promised: “The Government of the United States is determined that their Administration of Indian Affairs shall be directed entirely by the great principles of justice and humanity.” As soon as land grants and the formation of statehoods started, starting at the Ohio Valley, the Indians soon realized they were about to receive the short end of the stick. It led to resistance.
